LANDSCAPES

Picture

These two paintings above were done in the Summer of 2019 for Will and Charlotte. It's the first time I've worked on such large canvasses (100cm x 70cm). Cornwall on the left and Brittany on the right.

This is Penharn beach in Brittany on the left - again, quite a big canvas 70cmx70cm. I used lots and lots go glazes to try and get the depth of light and colour in the sea.  Theolen is on the right. About 30cm square. A view I've painted a lot and never get tired of.

THERE ARE LOTS MORE LANDSCAPES ON THE WYLYE VALLEY PAGE

Acrylic and pastels - 2011

In real life the colours are not as garish as here.

Trépassés

Picture
Oil on canvas - 2010

The light was really extraordinary. I took the photo from which I painted it when Lulu, Clive and I were out painting in the spring.

The boys on Trépassés

Picture

Oil on canvas

This is (from the left) Chris Sykes, Will and George. I painted it in 2009 but from a photograph that was probably taken in about 1996. The image of the children that I had in my mind was an illustration by Edward Ardizzone of a story called 'Elsie Piddock skips in her sleep' by Eleanor Farjeon. In the illustration the child's movement is suggested rather that shown in detail.

Baie des Trépassés - version 1

Oil on paper     2009

This version is meant to have a great sense of depth - whereas the one below is meant to be flat.

Baie des Trépassés - version 2

Picture

Oil on paper    2009

The brush strokes on this version are vertical as opposed to horizontal. The idea being that it would create a flat image (as opposed to Version 1). It was incredibly hard to do because it felt so unnatural but I really like the result. I haven't been able to do it again but i will keep trying!

Tixiers' house - Brittany 2009

Oil on canvas

I did the drawing for this in March when Lulu Chivers, Clive Thomas and I went out to Brittany for our first painting holiday! Lulu did a very colourful picture of Théolen which is in Capsize, and Clive painted a beautiful watercolour looking south from the lane up towards Théolen which he won't let me have!

Oil on canvas
Probably 2003

I took the photo for this painting from our hotel window when Paddy and I were in Hong Kong with Kim and Missy. I love this painting - mostly because there is so little colour in it and I like the energy that it has.

The bay at Douarnanez, Brittany

Oil on canvas   2006

I painted this for Hermione for Christmas in 2005. When she died I gave it to my sister Liz. Hermione loved Brittany and loved us being there. This one of the most beautiful views of that part of the world

Theolen - Cap Sizun, Brittany

Oil on canvas     2006-8

I started this painting in 2006 and then came back to it a couple of years later and improved it. Owned by Caroline Joy
